Esophageal Cancer

Esophageal cancer is a type of cancer that forms in the tissues of the esophagus, the long tube that carries food from the throat to the stomach. It is often diagnosed at a later stage because symptoms can be subtle in the early stages.

Symptoms

Symptoms of esophageal cancer may vary depending on the stage of the disease, but common symptoms include:

  • Difficulty Swallowing (Dysphagia)
  • Unintended Weight Loss
  • Chest Pain or Discomfort
  • Hoarseness or Chronic Cough
  • Indigestion or Heartburn
  • Fatigue
  • Regurgitation of Food

Diagnosis

Diagnosing esophageal cancer involves several steps to confirm the presence of cancer and determine its extent:

  • Upper GI Endoscopy
  • Biopsy
  • Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS)
  • Bronchoscopy
  • Blood Tests

Prevention and Early Detection

1. Screening:

  • Screening is generally not recommended for everyone but may be advised for individuals with Barrett's esophagus, a condition that can increase the risk of esophageal cancer.

2. Lifestyle Changes

3. Manage GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease)
